Carolyn MurphyMy experience at Humanity World International has been amazing. Paul Badasu, the Director, was extremely helpful and accommodating. He was happy to drive the volunteers places and carefully looked after the volunteers.
I was stationed at a school called Vivibon in Teshie Nungua and lived at Humanity World International’s home base with several other volunteers.
The ages at the school ranged from toddlers-17 years old. I switched between assisting with the ICT (computer) classes and substitute teaching for the 1st and 3rd grades. It was a continuously interesting experience to explore the cultural differences in education. The children were very sweet and enthusiastic to learn. The staff and headmaster were considerate and hospitable. The headmaster gave me the opportunity to name any preferences with age groups and/or subject matter and gave me the final say in what I did.
After school and on the weekends were up to the volunteers. I frequently went on walks around town and always felt safe. It is such a friendly town and atmosphere with enough people on the street at almost all hours. Volunteers can easily take tro-tros which are the Ghanaian equivalent of public transit. On the weekends and weekdays, I sometimes took a tro-tro into the capital Accra to sightsee. My favorite activity was swimming in a waterfall. There are plenty of other entertainments. Volunteers can easily access shopping areas, museums, and outdoorsy activities such as monkey sanctuaries and botanical gardens.
I quickly developed a liking for Ghanaian food. My new favorite food is now goat kebabs. I would occasionally pick up some fruit from the numerous stands on the way home from school. As a die-hard peanut butter fan, I thoroughly enjoyed the ground-nut soup.
Ghana is a wonderful African country to visit with its stable government and friendly locals. I strongly recommend using Humanity World International to experience Ghana.
