I was fortunate to be introduced to the beauty of the international community at a young age by my mother. She instilled in me the importance of not just experiencing new cultures and exploring the world, but the importance of reaching out to those in need.
Volunteer work allows for the unique opportunity to illuminate the power of the human spirit – people coming together, not for personal gain, but for the greater betterment of their communities. While rewarding domestically, it is an idea strengthened when applied internationally as it allows for a global community of collaboration. Like-minded, proactive locals and foreigners can come together to contribute resources and skills to help those less fortunate while building unforgettable cross cultural relationships that, in my experience, have always been life changing.
I always feel that the experience is enhanced by having no expectations of what I will get out of it, but instead simply showing up with a willingness to serve, a desire to enjoy new people, and a lot of flexibility.
